2019 US Airline Carry-on and Personal Item Limits - Comprehensive List

All airlines have different limits when it comes to what you can take as carry on items. When traveling on an airline, it is important make sure you do your research on what you are allowed to take on board, otherwise you may end up having to pay some additional fees, as well as having your luggage checked into the hold which can cause delays.

For that reason, we’ve compiled a comprehensive list of all major US American airlines and their respective carry-on limits, the table below summarizes each US airlines 2019 Carry-on and Personal item limits with links to their carry-on baggage policy pages and any additional info you may need to consider for each.  1. American Airlines

In 2019, American Airlines will allow you to take one personal ite m and one carry-on item with you as cabin travel free of charge. There may be additional carry-on bag restrictions at certain airports or when using certain planes. Musical instruments are also considered a carry-on item, therefore will still need to fit either under your chair or in the overhead bin.

Personal Item

Your personal item can include a range of travel accessories, but should not exceed 18 x 14 x 8 inches, and will have to fit under the seat in front of you for the duration of the flight.  

Carry On

Your carry-on bag can’t be any bigger that 22 x 14 x 9 inches. If you are unsure, you can make sure it isn’t too big at the size checking point located in the majority of airports.

Additional Information

If you are traveling with a child, you are also able to bring with you are range of items such as cooler bags, diaper bags safety seats and strollers. When traveling with a pet, the container will count as your carry-on item, and you will still have to pay the carry on pet fee. If you become part of the American Airlines frequent flyer program, it is likely that you will be able to have access to some membership offers that allow you to avoid baggage fees.

 2. Delta   

Delta airlines offer a one bag, one item, no charge baggage policy. You just have to ensure that all items will fit either in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. 

Personal Items

There are many different items that are considered approved, meaning you can bring them with you on your flight, some of which include a purse, briefcase, camera bag or diaper bag, a laptop or a travel gadget that is similar in size to those listed above. Anything larger than this is likely not to be approved. In addition to your personal item, you are also allowed to bring in the cabin a jacket, umbrella, any food bought after the security checkpoint and any duty-free items.

SO WHAT EXACTLY IS ALLOWED?

Approved Personal Items

  • 1 purse, briefcase, camera bag or diaper bag
  • or 1 laptop computer (computers cannot be checked)
  • or 1 item of a similar or smaller size to those listed above

Additional Approved Items

The following items do not count as personal items (they’re freebies):

  • A jacket and/or umbrella
  • Food or drink purchased after clearing the security checkpoint
  • Duty-free merchandise

Carry on

To avoid any additional fees or delays when taking on carry on bags with Delta, you should ensure that the bag is not any bigger than 45 inches in combined length, width and height, including handles and wheels, approximately 22" x 14" x 9" or 56 x 35 x  23 cm. The only exception to this is a small musical instrument, although this still must either fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

If you are traveling with a child, you are also able to bring on items such as strollers and child restraint seats without these counting as your personal item. Additionally, if you need any assistive devices such as a wheelchair or crutches, then these also do not count as your additional item.

 3. Southwest   

Personal Item

All passengers with Southwest are eligible to take on board a personal item in addition to your carry-on bag. The sort of personal items you are allowed include the likes of a purse, briefcase, camera, food container or laptop and case. These items must be stored under the seat in front of you for both landing and take-off, therefore must not exceed the size of 18.5 x 8.5 x 13.5 inches. If your item doesn’t fit under the seat in front of you, then you will be asked to put it in the overhead bin.

Like most airlines, Southwest have some restrictions regarding how big your carry-on bag can be. As the bag must be stored in the overhead bin for the duration of the flight, it can’t exceed 10 x 16 x 24 inches.

Additional Information

If you are traveling with a pet, then the pet carrier is counted as either your personal item or your carry-on item. In addition to the above, you are also able to take on board a walking cane or umbrella, food for consumption during the flight (as long as it is stored in disposable packaging), wearable items of clothing, mobility devices and child restraint devices.

4. United Airlines

Most travelers with United Airlines are able to bring on board with them one full-sized carry on bag in addition to a personal item free of charge. However, if you have purchased a Basic Economy ticket for anywhere other than a trans-Atlantic flight you will only be allowed one personal item. All items will need to fit either under the seat in front of you, or in the overhead bins above.

Your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you, so can be items such as a shoulder bag, a purse, a laptop, or other travel accessory and must have the dimensions of 9 x 10 x 17 inches or less. This will be the only item you are allowed to bring on board if you have a Basic Economy ticket.

The maximum dimensions for a carry-on bag are 9 x 14 x 22 inches, and this has to include the handles and wheels.

Additional Information

As well as your personal and carry on item, you are also allowed to bring a jacket or umbrella on board, some reading material, food and merchandise that have been purchased in the airport, a pet carrier, camera, breast pump, diaper bag, FAA-approved child restraint system or safety seat, and assistive devices such as collapsible wheelchair, cane or set of crutches. If you have an item that is too fragile or bulky to check in, then you can transport these items in a seat for an additional fee. More information can be found on the company website.

5. Alaskan Airlines

When traveling with Alaskan Airlines, you are allowed one carry-on bag plus one personal item. At least one of these items must be stored under the seat in front of you during the flight, plus you should be able to fit your carry-on bag overhead.

Personal items include items such as a purse, briefcase, travel gadget or a laptop in a laptop bag.

The airline has recently got new carry-on bag restrictions. It has now changed to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which includes the wheels and handles. All three of these measurements should not add up to more than 45 inches.

6. Jet Blue

Every customer of JetBlue is allowed to bring on board one personal item, which has to be able to fit underneath the seat in front of you, and one carry on bag, which will be stored in the bin overhead.

Personal Item

All personal items should be able to fit under the seat in front of you, therefore must not be any bigger than 17 x 13 x 8 inches. Personal items may include a purse, briefcase or laptop in addition to your carry-on bag. Other examples of personal items include a portable airplane footrest which is used for DVT prevention.

At the moment, JetBlue doesn’t have any limit to the weight of your carry-on bag, you simply have to make sure that it will fit in the overhead bin. Therefore, your bag does not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches, which includes any wheels or handles.

In addition to your personal item and carry on bag, you are also able to take on some other items, which will not count towards your limit. These include any duty-free items, assistive devices and special items such as a coat, umbrella and infant car seat.

7. Spirit Air

In order to keep ticket prices as low as possible, this airline charge for both carry on and checked bags. One personal item is included in your ticket, and any other personal item will have to be paid for.

Personal Item

Personal items include things such as a purse, small backpack or a laptop. These dimensions must not exceed 19 x 14 x 8 inches including the handles and wheels.

The maximum size for a carry-on bag is 22 x 18 x 10 inches, and this includes handles and wheels.

 8. Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines offer one free personal item per customer, if you then require an additional carry-on bag then you must pay a fee.

Personal Item

A personal item must fit in the seat in front of you, and must not exceed the dimensions of 8 x 18 x 14 inches. One personal item per passenger is free of charge.

Carry on

Your carry-on bags can be no bigger than 24 x 16 x 10, which includes all handles, wheel and straps. They must also be no heavier than 35 pounds and fit in the overhead bin. The carry-on bag fees vary depending on when you purchased the carry on bag and where you purchased it, with the most expensive option being buying it at the departure gate when you get to the airport. If you are a Frontier Miles Elite member or a passenger that purchases ‘The Works’, then you will get your carry-on bag free of charge in addition to your personal item.

Additional Items

There are a few items that you are able to take on board in addition to your other baggage items. For example, if you are traveling with an infant then you are about to bring a diaper bag, and medical equipment is also often allowed such as respiratory devices, canes and crutches.

9. Allegiant Air

All passengers of Allegiant Air are able to bring on one personal item free of charge. You are also able to bring on a carry-on bag, but you’ll be required to pay a fee.

Personal Item

Your free personal item can include travel accessories such as a briefcase, purse or a small backpack, and must be stored completely under the seat in front of you during the flight. The maximum dimensions for this piece of luggage are 7 x 15 x 16 inches.

Carry on

If needed, you are able to purchase one carry-on bag per person. These can include a small roll aboard suitcase or a garment bag, and these must be able to fit in the overhead bun. The maximum size for the carry-on bag is 9 x 14 x 22 inches.

Additional Information

You are also allowed to additionally bring on board any necessary medical or assistive devices, such as a stroller for a child, as well as a small umbrella, food for consumption on board, a diaper bag and a jacket or coat.

 10. Hawaiian Airlines



Hawaiian Airlines allows their passengers to bring on board one piece of carry-on baggage and one personal item.

Personal Items

Your personal items can include the likes of a purse, briefcase, laptop bag, backpack and other items or travel accessories of a similar nature and size. Your primary storage area with this airline is under the seat in front of you, with the overhead space on a first come, first served basis. If all storage areas are full, then you may be asked to check your bag in to be picked up at your destination.

Your carry-on bag must be no bigger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and weigh no more than 25 pounds. This is when it comes in handy to know how to pack light!

Additional Information

If you are traveling with kids, then you will be able to receive some carry-on exemptions. As long as the following items can fit properly into the overhead compartment, then you are able to bring them on board as part of your carry-on allowance. These include any car seats, infant carrying seats and strollers.
